Chinese Grand Prix – Sprint Race: George Russell Takes the Win Ahead of the Two Ferraris
It's another victory for George Russell, this time in the Sprint race. He won by just 0.6 seconds ahead of Leclerc, while Hamilton rounded out the top three. Russell had to fight hard to secure the win, but he ultimately managed to come out on top.
Apart from four drivers starting on hard tires, everyone else is on mediums. Graining will be something to watch out for, as it's particularly significant here in Shanghai. Alex Albon starts from the pit lane. Antonelli gets stuck on the starting grid when the lights go out, just like at the start in Australia; Hamilton takes immediate advantage and moves into second place, and even takes the lead by the second corner. The Ferrari is very aggressive. Lindblad spins out but manages to get his car back on track. Antonelli drops straight to eighth place; the Italian has once again had a terrible start, for which he will receive a 10-second penalty. Verstappen also got stuck on the track at the start; he drops from 8th to 13th place and crashes into his teammate. A series of overtakes at the front of the Sprint race
Russell, however, wasn't there to string beads; he's right on Hamilton's tail, even though Hamilton set the fastest lap. Behind the top two, Leclerc, Norris, and Piastri are bunched together, while Antonelli has climbed back up to sixth place by the third lap. It was only a matter of time: Russell takes the lead in this Sprint race on that very lap… And Hamilton reclaims the lead two turns later. We're treated to another series of overtakes. The battle intensifies between the two Brits and former teammates, while Leclerc closes in from behind and sticks to the other Ferrari. There is then a gap of more than two seconds between the Monegasque driver and fourth-place Norris. Leclerc attacks his teammate on the eighth lap and takes second place, with the gap to the leader now widening to two seconds. But Hamilton doesn't back down and in turn sticks close to the Ferrari. This does not please Leclerc, who complains over the radio about the lack of space left by the Brit. Meanwhile, Kimi Antonelli has moved back up to fourth place and is less than a second behind Hamilton. The Italian, in turn, threatens the two Ferraris and soon takes third place from the Brit, but he still has a 10-second penalty in his tires. As things stand, on lap 12, this means he would drop to sixth place. Safety car intervention Lawson takes the lead over Hadjar, who had climbed to eighth place. The New Zealander moves up to eighth place ahead of Berman and behind Piastri. Behind them, Verstappen battles with his teammate in hopes of breaking into the top 10. Bad news for Lindblad, who has to retire from this Sprint race on lap 13. Bottas joins him in the ranks of the retirements, along with Nico Hülkenberg, who pulls into a run-off area due to a problem with his car and triggers yellow flags… And, quickly, a safety car. This spells trouble for Antonelli and his 10-second penalty, as everyone will bunch up.
We take the opportunity to pit for the top 6 in the Sprint race, quickly joined by the rest of the grid, except for Lawson, who remains on track. The pit stop goes very badly for Hadjar, who loses precious seconds. Antonelli serves his 10-second penalty and emerges just ahead of Piastri's McLaren, in 7th. Norris has slipped in between the two Ferraris, in third. A heated exchange between Ocon and Gasly The work on Hülkenberg's car is taking time, as it hasn't been cleared yet as we begin the 16th lap. It will be removed at the end of that same lap.
We witness a strange exchange between Ocon and Gasly: the Alpine driver attacks the Haas in a rather erratic manner, and under double yellow flags, as Ocon mentions over the radio. To be continued. At the restart, Russell doesn't hesitate, while Leclerc suffers from significant rear wheel spin. Antonelli is passed by Piastri, and Hamilton immediately tries to put pressure on Norris with only two laps remaining. He takes third place from him on the next lap, while Piastri moves up to fifth. We learn that Perez receives a 5-second penalty for an incident under the safety car. Antonelli isn't done yet and squeezes between the two McLarens to move up to fifth place. Verstappen has climbed back up to 9th place. Not too bad after his big lockup at the start…
George Russell crosses the finish line to win this Sprint race, followed by Charles Leclerc, less than a second behind, and Lewis Hamilton. Next come Norris, Antonelli, Piastri, Lawson, Bearman, Verstappen, and Ocon, who rounds out the top 10.
