Oscar Piastri finished second on the podium after a promising weekend and a solid race. The McLaren driver was disappointed that the safety car didn't work out in his favor.

He has finally reaped his reward. After a season opener marked by a crash on the formation lap in Australia, followed by a retirement due to an engine failure in China, the McLaren driver opened his points tally in the best possible way by climbing onto the second step of the podium at the end of a weekend that was as solid as it was promising.

Things go pretty well when you start from the front!” he remarked with a smile.

The Australian long believed he could aim even higher. With a remarkable start and a convincing pace at the front of the race, Piastri seemed capable of controlling his pursuers, starting with George Russell. But the race scenario decided otherwise.

The safety car's intervention reshuffled the deck at the worst possible moment for the McLaren driver. Having pitted a few laps before the safety car deployed, he couldn't take advantage of the “free” pit stop that some of his rivals benefited from. It's a turning point he still regrets. “It would have been really interesting to see what would have happened without that. I think I could have kept George behind me. Just before the pit stops, we were starting to build up a small gap again. So yes, it's a shame we never got to see what would have happened.”

“We seized every opportunity”

Despite this frustration, it's hard not to highlight the overall performance. Fast, consistent, and strategically sound, Piastri maximized his car's potential in a tricky race. And even though victory briefly seemed within reach, the young driver kept a cool head, noting that “being disappointed to finish second is a very good position.”

Expressing gratitude toward his team, he emphasizes the progress made while maintaining a clear-eyed view of what lies ahead. McLaren will need to improve its performance further to aim for victory. “We seized every opportunity today,” he concludes. A statement that perfectly sums up a successful race and perhaps heralds an even more ambitious future.
