McLaren's Chinese Grand Prix weekend ended before it even began. Hampered by two separate technical issues, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri weren't even able to start the race. A double retirement before the formation lap leaves a particularly bitter taste in the Woking garage.
McLaren was well-positioned on the grid in Shanghai. Oscar Piastri had qualified fifth, just ahead of Lando Norris in sixth. Nothing extraordinary, but a solid foundation for aiming for points.
But just as the cars were lining up on the grid, Norris's No. 4 McLaren stubbornly remained in the garage. The mechanics were bustling around the car, clearly facing a serious problem.
The situation only got worse a few minutes later: Oscar Piastri's car also returned to the garage before the formation lap.
Final verdict: no McLarens on the starting grid.
A worst-case scenario that turns Sunday into a mere spectator session for the team.
Lando Norris: “Frustrating for the whole team”
Speaking to the media, Lando Norris didn't have much to say… but he was clearly frustrated.
The Brit mentioned an electronic issue related to the power unit, serious enough to simply prevent the car from starting. “There was an electronic issue with the power unit. It's disappointing for me, for Oscar, and for the whole team. “A tremendous amount of work goes into it beforehand, and it just doesn't pay off.”
The McLaren driver emphasized that the mechanics tried everything to get the car running again. “The mechanics tried everything they could to fix the problem, but it was a major issue.”
The only option now: analyze and understand. “We're going to look at what happened and try to figure out how we can improve.”
And Norris emphasizes one point: the two cars suffered from different issues.
Oscar Piastri: “Very unlucky”
For Oscar Piastri, the situation is all the more frustrating as this is the second consecutive weekend without a start. The Australian had already missed his home Grand Prix in Melbourne after a crash during the reconnaissance lap.
In Shanghai, the problem this time was electrical, as with Norris, but different nonetheless. “It was an electrical issue with the power unit, different from Lando's.”
It's hard to say more at this point. “We don't yet know exactly what happened. It's obviously very disappointing. ” The McLaren driver is trying to look ahead, however. “We'll try to learn from watching the race, then do as much work as possible before Japan.”
Because beyond this incident, Piastri points out that the team still has work to do. “Today's problems are frustrating, but we also know we still need to find more performance.”
Andrea Stella: “An extremely unfortunate coincidence”
As for the team principal, Andrea Stella makes no secret of his disappointment. “We came here to race, and today we simply weren't able to do so because of technical issues.”
A difficult situation for the entire team to accept. “It's very disappointing for the team, for the drivers, and for our fans. We're sorry about that.”
According to the Italian, the two incidents appear to be completely unrelated. “The problems seem different, but they occurred at the same time for a reason we still need to understand. It's an extremely unfortunate coincidence.”
McLaren forced to bounce back
In the end, McLaren's Chinese Grand Prix boiled down to a few minutes of anxiety in the garage… and a race watched from the pits.
In a championship where every point counts, this double DNS is obviously a stain. But at McLaren, the focus is already on what comes next. Analysis, understanding… and a fresh start in Japan. With, this time, a fairly simple hope: at least to make the start…
