Formula 1 is not immune to criticism. The boredom that certain races inspire generally stems from a lack of enthusiasm for modern circuits.

These circuits, named “Tilke” after modern circuit designer Hermann Tilke, have never been popular with drivers. They are often criticized for their wide asphalt run-off areas and lack of corners that truly test the handling of the cars. Romain Grosjean even compared the Sochi track to a parking lot.

The return of classic circuits

The pandemic, while disruptive, forced Formula 1 to forego traveling to distant destinations most affected by the virus and return to its European roots. This led to the revival of legendary circuits such as Mugello, Nürburgring, and Imola, which still make fans' hearts beat faster. This year's events at these circuits generated exactly the enthusiasm that many had hoped for, and the historic Portimão circuit in Portugal also made a successful debut on the F1 calendar.

The drivers agree

The drivers enjoyed being able to prove themselves on traditional tracks with gravel traps that punish the slightest mistake and corners that require real physical effort. From young Lando Norris to veteran Romain Grosjean, president of the GPDA, the consensus was clear: racing on these old-school circuits was a pleasure. Fans in the stands and viewers at home shared this enthusiasm.

Financial realities

Beyond the sporting aspect, the financial situation remains critical after an unprecedented health and economic crisis. Existing contracts must be honored, and the nations that were left out in 2020 are naturally eager to return to the 2021 calendar. However, it is possible to adopt a more balanced approach, alternating between the classic calendar and a more daring one that would reintroduce circuits that are no longer on the program. Grosjean has even put forward this idea. If all parties can find reasonable compromises while preserving their interests, such a rotation could become a reality and pave the way for a brighter future for the sport.
