Formula 1 rules stipulate a specific race distance, meaning that each circuit has a different number of laps. As a result, the number of laps varies considerably from one circuit to another.

The sprint race – The distance of each sprint, measured between the start signal (Article 43.11) and the end of session signal (Article 59.1), corresponds to the smallest number of complete laps exceeding 100 km. If one hour elapses before the scheduled sprint distance is completed, the leader will receive the checkered flag one lap after the hour has elapsed, provided that the scheduled number of laps has not been exceeded. Exceptions are made only in the following situations: 1. If the sprint session is suspended, the suspension time is added to the total, up to a maximum sprint duration of one and a half hours. 2. If the formation lap starts behind the safety car, the number of sprint laps is reduced by the number of laps completed behind the safety car, minus one. When the formation lap starts behind the safety car, the initial sprint distance is considered to be the distance calculated in accordance with Article 5.3a)ii). The maximum duration of one and a half hours always starts from the scheduled start time of the sprint.

Sunday race – The distance of any Grand Prix, measured between the start signal (Article 44.10) and the end of session signal (Article 59.1), is the smallest number of full laps exceeding 305 km. The same procedure as for sprint races applies, but with a time limit of two hours: once the clock reaches zero, one final lap is allowed. The specific points are as follows: 1. The distance of the Monaco Grand Prix will be the smallest number of complete laps exceeding 260 km. 2. If the race is suspended, the suspension time is added, up to a maximum total duration of three hours. 3. If the formation lap starts behind the safety car, the number of race laps is reduced by the number of safety car laps minus one.

When the formation lap starts behind the safety car, the initial race distance is considered to be the distance calculated in accordance with Article 5.4c). The maximum duration of three hours also starts from the scheduled start time of the race.
