The qualifying session for the ADAC 24 Hours of Nürburgring was abruptly halted after a crash involving seven cars early in the session. Race officials immediately activated emergency procedures to allow emergency responders to intervene.
Despite receiving prompt medical attention at the scene, 66-year-old Juha Miettinen did not survive his injuries. Extracted from his vehicle by medical teams, he died shortly afterward at the medical center, despite resuscitation attempts.
Six drivers hospitalized, none with serious injuries
The six other drivers involved in the accident were transported to the circuit's medical center as well as to nearby hospitals. Organizers stated that their injuries were not life-threatening.
Out of respect and for safety reasons, the session did not resume that evening.
Present at the event, Max Verstappen reacted with restraint after the announcement of the death. “Motorsports is a passion we all share, but in moments like this, it reminds us just how dangerous it can be.”
The four-time world champion also extended his condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased driver.
Tribute Before the Resumption
The organizers had announced that a minute of silence would be observed in memory of Juha Miettinen during the formation of the starting grid, before the race resumed at 1:00 p.m. local time on Sunday.
Beyond the competition, this event serves as a reminder of the inherent risks of motorsports, despite constant advances in safety.
In these circumstances, the entire paddock gathers in solemn remembrance. Our thoughts are with the family, loved ones, and teams of Juha Miettinen.
