In 2023, Formula 1 will make its big comeback to Las Vegas after a 41-year hiatus.
Rhinestones, sequins, millions of lights, and casinos: after the 1981 and 1982 editions, Formula 1 is returning to Las Vegas, this time for a nighttime show. Is this really a surprise? Not really, especially when you consider that the sport is hugely popular across the Atlantic and that Miami is set to join the calendar.
There is, however, a touch of novelty. The United States covers a vast territory dotted with legendary circuits, from Daytona to Long Beach, Road America and Road Atlanta. So why bother “building” a new site? And why do it in the spotlight, at a time when the environment is under intense scrutiny? Some tracks simply do not meet FIA regulations, and the idea of running F1 cars at Daytona is virtually impossible. Yet when you look at the current calendar—Jeddah, for example—one of North America's best circuits could realistically do the job: The Glen.
The Glen is not only picturesque, hilly, and technically demanding, but it also has a rich and bittersweet history with the sport. It's the kind of place many drivers would love to race at. So maybe it's time to give it a chance.
