Season after season, Sauber continues to plummet down the rankings, and hitting rock bottom could well be the catalyst for a strong comeback. However, the team's future now depends on a potential investor who could come to the rescue of the Swiss team, which is in financial difficulty.

The collision between Felipe Nasr and Marcus Ericsson's Sauber C35s at Rascasse in the final laps of the Monaco Grand Prix highlights the challenges currently facing the Swiss team. During the weekend in Monaco, Monisha Kaltenborn stepped out of her motorhome to make a rare public statement about Sauber's uncertain future. It is never easy to race as an independent team among the giants of the sport, and the task has only become more difficult since Peter Sauber bought the team from BMW. Kaltenborn has been running one of Formula 1's oldest teams for several seasons, but finding funding has become increasingly problematic for a team that lacks solid results and therefore struggles to attract sponsors.

Last year, the arrival of Felipe Nasr brought a welcome injection of funds from Banco do Brasil, giving Sauber some short-term financial breathing room, just enough to keep the blue and yellow livery on the cars and continue the search for a solid investor capable of ensuring the team's long-term survival.

As a result, speculation has been rife for months about potential buyers. Ferrari is the name that comes up most often, with talk of Sauber being transformed into a B team under the Alfa Romeo brand. The Italian brand, owned by Fiat, is reportedly considering a return to F1 and sees an established and experienced team as a shortcut to avoid the difficulties of creating a new team from scratch.

However, Kaltenborn has always refused to comment on the financial aspect, and no credible confirmation of takeover negotiations has been made. In the meantime, Sauber continues to fight for results and hopes to score its first points of the season in Canada, with the aim of overtaking its closest rival, Manor.
