After winning the last two Monaco Grand Prix races, Nico Rosberg is on track to clinch a third consecutive victory this weekend, joining the ranks of legendary drivers who have won this iconic race more than twice.
The narrow, winding streets of Monaco have long been a testing ground where only the best can turn a weekend into legend. The circuit's unforgiving curbs, uneven asphalt, and famous Sainte-Dévote hill have stopped countless champions in their tracks, and the numbers bear this out. Only six drivers have managed to win more than twice here: Ayrton Senna, who still tops the rankings with six wins; Graham Hill and Michael Schumacher, with five wins each; Alain Prost, with four wins; and Jackie Stewart and Stirling Moss, with three wins each. With the exception of Moss, all of these multiple winners have also won at least three world titles, which highlights how rare it is to achieve lasting success in the Principality. Even rarer is the feat of three consecutive victories. Only Graham Hill, Alain Prost, and Ayrton Senna have achieved this hat trick, with a combined total of nine championship titles between them. Nico Rosberg, whose father won a Williams trophy on this same asphalt in 1983, is now aiming for this very exclusive club. After two consecutive victories in 2013 and 2014, a third consecutive victory would place him alongside these historic figures. But the road to a third victory begins well before the checkered flag. Qualifying in Monaco is almost as decisive as the race itself: the pole sitter has won nine of the last ten Grand Prix races, and all the winners of the last two decades started in the top three positions. The only exception, Olivier Panis, won in 1996 after starting 14th in a Ligier, a statistical anomaly that continues to fuel the hopes of outsiders. For Rosberg, it is therefore essential to secure a place on the front row if he hopes to rewrite the history books.
The challenge is made all the more difficult by the fact that his rivals are hungry for revenge. Lewis Hamilton is still reeling from last year's disappointment, Sebastian Vettel is desperate to add another prestigious victory to his tally at Ferrari, and Kimi Raikkonen, the 2013 champion, will be looking to repeat his success in Monaco ten years ago. All eyes will be on Rosberg as he navigates the narrow streets, faces the ghosts of former winners, and attempts to cement his place in the history of the Monegasque elite. The answer will come when the lights go out on Sunday evening.
