At the 2010 Brazilian Grand Prix, German rookie Nico Hülkenberg surprised everyone by taking pole position in his Williams-Cosworth. It was a remarkable achievement in his first season in Formula 1, as he beat the favorites before the race.

Fresh from winning the GP2 championship, 23-year-old Nico Hülkenberg made his Formula 1 debut under the guidance of Frank Williams. The German rookie was given a drive for the 2010 season in a classic Williams chassis powered by an aging but reliable Cosworth V8 engine.

His first race weekend in Malaysia did not set the world alight, but Hülkenberg showed impressive pace by qualifying fifth on a circuit that favored engine power, a remarkable feat given the limitations of his FW32's Cosworth engine. Converting that speed into points proved more difficult, but “Hulk,” as he was nicknamed in the paddock, still managed to score a few points and hold his own against his experienced teammate Rubens Barrichello. Both drivers arrived at the penultimate round in São Paulo with modest expectations. As is often the case in Brazil, the weather became a determining factor, with rain falling throughout the three-day program and intensifying during Saturday's qualifying session. The showers kept the drivers on their toes, with the intensity of the rainfall varying until, about an hour before the end, the track began to dry out. In such conditions, the usual strategy is to wait as long as possible to set the fastest lap, but the championship battle at Interlagos made the leaders nervous. They did not expect the last to go out to be the young German.

Hülkenberg took to the track at the very end and set the fastest time of the session, more than a second ahead of his closest rival, fellow German Sebastian Vettel in the Red Bull, who had to settle for second place. This result gave Williams its first pole position in five years, a remarkable achievement for the “Incredible Hulk.”

On race day, the track was dry and Hülkenberg's Williams struggled to keep up with the pack, eventually finishing in a respectable eighth place. Nevertheless, his pole position at the Brazilian Grand Prix has earned him a place in Formula 1 history, and he will be keen to build on this performance as the season draws to a close, especially as Force India seems to be in great form in recent races.
