George Russell plays it down after a chaotic qualifying session: “It could have been much worse”
George Russell experienced mechanical issues with his Mercedes during the Chinese Grand Prix qualifying session, which hindered his attempts to secure pole position. Starting second on the grid for the Chinese Grand Prix, George Russell ultimately fared well after a particularly turbulent qualifying session for Mercedes.
The Briton experienced several technical issues, starting with a broken front wing in Q2. “We were trying to figure out what had happened,” Russell explained. “The front wing had broken, and there was a bit of stress surrounding that.”
But the troubles didn't end there. A tense Q3 At the start of the final segment of the session, Russell did indeed encounter new mechanical problems. “I went out on track, the car stopped and wouldn't start again. I couldn't shift gears.”
The Mercedes driver finally managed to get back out for a single attempt. “At the start of my lap, I had no battery power left, no tire temperature, nothing at all.” Under those conditions, second place is almost a feat.
“The goal was simply to set a time and start from a decent position. Honestly, second place is much better than I expected.” Ferrari in the crosshairs at the start While Mercedes locks up the front row, Russell knows the Ferrari threat will be immediate.
“We'll also have to keep an eye on the guys in red. They're very fast off the line.” The opening laps could therefore be lively, just like at the Australian Grand Prix. “We saw in Melbourne and during the Sprint that the start of the race was very intense. I'm sure it won't be easy tomorrow.”
