The Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, scheduled for this weekend, has been canceled without controversy. This time, Formula 1 has shown common sense, and that's a good thing.

American-style F1 has not always been popular. Examples include outdated attempts to make the premier class more spectacular with a series of gimmicks, such as absurd driver introductions reminiscent of boxing matches, and regulations that were often hastily drafted.

This time, the sport, in collaboration with the FIA, took a logical and proactive approach: how to organize a Grand Prix in such difficult circumstances? Flooding in Emilia-Romagna caused several deaths, forced schools to close, and flooded the streets of Bologna, as well as the F1, F2, and F3 paddocks.

From there, the choice was clear: we can only congratulate F1 for taking the initiative rather than imposing a fake race (think Spa 2021). The emergency services, already overwhelmed, would not have been able to effectively rescue the inhabitants of the Italian province. In addition, the conditions, particularly the arrival and departure of spectators, would have created numerous problems. The Monaco Grand Prix takes place this weekend and could have been compromised by possible delays, although rain could still affect the race. We will never know what the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix would have been like. Would Red Bull have faltered? Would Alonso have finally won a victory that seemed within his grasp? Could Ferrari have regained the spotlight on its home turf? These questions will remain unanswered.
