On November 9, a free tribute day to Ayrton Senna will be held in the streets of São Paulo, marking the 25th anniversary of his tragic death on May 1, 1994, in Imola, just one week before the Brazilian Grand Prix.
São Paulo will become a living museum dedicated to speed on Saturday, November 9, when Ibirapuera Park opens its doors for a free tribute celebrating the 25th anniversary of Ayrton Senna. From noon to 6 p.m., fans will be able to admire the cars that marked the career of the three-time Brazilian champion: the 1984 Toleman that launched his Formula 1 career and the 1985 Lotus 97T that earned him his first victory.
The exhibition is more than just a static display. Two of Brazil's most famous drivers will be driving these historic cars: two-time world champion Emerson Fittipaldi, who won the titles in 1972 and 1974, and 2008 runner-up Felipe Massa. Adding a touch of modernity, a Renault and a Mercedes single-seater will roar into the park, the latter driven by Mexico's Esteban Gutierrez. Beyond the machines, the day will be punctuated by a concert, pit stop simulations, and eSports races, transforming this celebration into a true festival of automotive culture. “Ayrton Senna is a true legend of our sport and his legacy is both immense and inspiring,” said Sean Bratches, F1's commercial operations director. “Bringing Formula 1 to the streets of São Paulo offers fans a unique opportunity to experience the speed, noise, and excitement up close.”
Bianca Senna, niece of the late driver and director of the Senna Foundation, shares this sentiment: “Seeing the historic cars that marked Ayrton's greatest moments will be incredible for fans. Hosting such an event in the heart of São Paulo makes 2019 a year of magnificent tributes to his 25-year legacy.”
While Fittipaldi, Massa, and Gutierrez will be present, some notable names will be absent. Bruno Senna, Ayrton's nephew and former F1 driver, as well as Alain Prost and Rubens Barrichello, have not confirmed their participation. This tribute comes just before the penultimate race of the season, the Brazilian Grand Prix, scheduled for November 17.
